With a free shuttle we drove today to Calico, an old silver mining town. Around 1881 silver was found there and a boom arose. More than 1,200 people lived there during the heyday, before the price of silver fell sharply, people moved away and a ghost town with only a few inhabitants remained behind. In the 1950s, Walter Knott (the owner of Knott's Berryfarm, an amusement park in California) bought everything and restored part of the city.
So it presents itself today as a mixture of very simple amusement park, museum and shopping mile. The few attractions are limited to a walk-in mine, a gold washing facility (small pieces of pyrite in the sand) and the "Mystery Shack Tour". This was really funny, especially because of the guide who presented everything well. It was mainly optical illusions with slants, but also smaller tricks like an always running faucet.
Despite the small offer we were quite well entertained and busy, so that it was fast 16:00h, the time our shuttle should pick us up again. Unfortunately he did not come. I checked the whole parking lot again, but nowhere was our shuttle car. After waiting 30 minutes I called the campground and learned that we had apparently been forgotten. 5 minutes later we were picked up with many apologies.
In the evening, the children used the campground again. In addition to the space for the RV's and tents, there was a large area for archery (but without targets, only with hay bales) and there they built small houses for animals with wood, dirt and water. With a lot of enthusiasm and imagination time flew by. For dinner we enjoyed a movie (The Goonies) before it went to the beds.
