Today we went back to the Arches. We had permission to hike in the "Fiery Furnace". The great thing is that the permits are very limited. One is often alone on the trail, without the hordes of tourists.
The morning, however, began unfriendly. It was cold and it was raining. Nevertheless, the children, and of course us, at least wanted to go there and see the situation on the spot. So we prepared the RV and drove off. As expected, Arches did not have as many visitors as it did two days ago. The visibility was very bad and the rain then changed to snow.
"Fortunately" we started in cold weather in Switzerland, so we had thick jackets and gloves. Together with the rain pants, we dressed as warm as we could and started the walk in light snowfall. In the "Fiery Furnace" there are strict rules, where you can go through and where not. The protection of nature should be above everything else. So we decided to follow a prepared path of the rangers. This is marked with small arrows on the stones. Unfortunately, these are sown very sparse and we had to search often and sometimes take a few steps back. So we came across again and again on another hiking group, which was also lost a few times.
The hike was very exciting, and sometimes challenging. Narrow passages between two rock walls, paths on the precipice alone made sure that you had to concentrate heavily. In addition the wind and always again some rain / snow provided for further influences. It was never overly dangerous and we made good progress. We were compensated by spectacular views and impressions.
After 2.5 hours we were back at the parking lot. And, in fact, everyone would have liked to hike a little longer, despite the circumstances. We warmed up in the RV and drove back. After a short stop in the Visitor Center we continued to Moab, where we went for some shopping and then ate delicious pizza. The next day we would definitely leave Moab and drive in the direction of "Capitol Reef".
