In the morning it was time to definitely say goodbye to the Carvin's. We hope to be able to welcome them in Switzerland someday. And we did not want to be sad about leaving, but rather happy about the new friends we found.
Before the big "Good Bye" we enjoyed a great breakfast with pancakes and bacon. Then followed a few group photos and finally we couldn't drag it out any more. We said goodbye, got in our camper and drove off.
We crossed Albuquerque one last time and then headed north-west. The end of the trip today was planned to be Cortez, a small town right by the "Mesa Verde National Park". The 5 hour drive was extremely varied and the landscape changed more and more towards the mountains. Thanks to the guide we made a short detour to the city of Aztec and there we visited the "Aztec Ruins", a national monument that shows the remains of a pueblo village. About 900 years ago there lived indigenous people (no Aztecs, the ruins are called just like that) and the ruins showed very impressively what a "Kiva" (spiritual gathering place) is and how such a village was built. Knowledge that we could use very soon.
After visiting the ruins we drove to Cortez and moved into our sleeping place. It was time to start early the next morning, in the first national park of many in the next few days.
