After the Carslbad Caverns today was another, long-awaited highlight on the program: Roswell. In Roswell in 1947 a UFO allegedly crashed, but the US military denied it and talked of a "weather balloon". In the 70s came the big conspiracy wave and since then Roswell is the mecca of the UFO fans.
The drive from Carlsbad to Roswell lasted only 1 hour and we were lucky that we found a parking space right in front of the UFO museum. At the entrance hung a big world map and USA map and you could put a PIN in your home country / hometown. The kids were happy to be the first Swiss. However, the PIN's are only there for a month, then they are removed. But after all, we were the first Swiss in March 2018 :)
The museum itself was unfortunately disappointing. Very textual and stale. Although the various testimonies and theories about UFO's were not uninteresting, but unfortunately not presented appealingly. And for the kids, the English was too difficult.
So we left after just over 15 minutes the museum again and visited the various souvenir shops. But even there we did not find really cool or funny t-shirts or gifts. So we set out to visit the campground for the next night. It was a rather small (only about 10-15 spots)and at first glance did not do much for the kids. A global "oh .. here it is boring" was the result. How should we be wrong ...
First we met our direct neighbors, the Carvin family. First, we were welcomed by their dog "Buddy", a super friendly Golden Retriever. Then we got to know all the rest, and apart from the parents Scott and Sammy, there were 6 children: Patrick, Jayden, Ethan, Eli, James and Peyton. And we made friends quickly. The kids used the Google Translator to play with each other, and the parents talked about life in the RV. So we also arranged to BBQ together in the evening.
After that we met the family Jensen from Arkansas. The father was retired from the military and the whole family was off to a cow farmer where they will live one year and the father will learn all about a cow farm. Then they travel on and look for a great piece of land to build their own cow farm. Super friendly people and Zoé made friends with the daughter Dorothee.
So the afternoon / evening for the children and us became a big meeting of new friends. The kids exchanged the first pins they got from Auntie Pia and we parents spent a super comfy evening around the fire pit. The kids even watched a movie together and it was getting late. But it was more than worth it. Because we have found great new friends.
