As planned, we got up early today and drove to the Mesa Verde National Park, which was only 15 minutes away. In the Visitor Center we learned about the different sights and planned the day, then we drove to the museum, which was about 45 minutes away. The road led up into the mountains and already showed impressive views of the surrounding area. Nicole was extremely busy taking pictures while I unfortunately had to concentrate on the road.
At the museum we were a bit worried that the experience of "Roswell" would be repeated. But we were pleasantly surprised. Beautiful miniatures first explained the different eras of the pueblo villagers and after that there were many showcases with finds from the surrounding area. The children (and we too) were fascinated to get a glimpse into life 1200-800 years ago. After that we were curious to finally see the first cliff villages, the highlight of the park.
Just behind the museum was the "Spruce Tree House". Unfortunately, access is currently not possible, so we only saw it from a distance. But that was already impressive. It is hard to believe how people managed to build their houses right in the middle of the cliffs. And at the thought that they climbed the cliffs only with self-hewn holes up and down was hard to believe. That was not easy, especially since they were also transporting goods or children.
After the "Spruce Tree House" we went on a tour with the RV and could see remnants of villages at many stops, or catch a good view of the villages and houses in the cliffs. We were really excited and time flew by. In the evening we left the park, went shopping for a while, got our dinner (Subway) and drove about 2 hours to Moab, Utah. Here is a working day scheduled for the next day before leaving for the Arches National Park on Friday. There we expect the next highlight.
