Out West Wanderings II

Day 15! How fast time has gone. Yesterday, five of us had decided to ride together and see if we could find the illusive waterfall. Dan and I had tried earlier and couldn't find the trail leading to it.

We took Al, Marie, and Gary with us. Marie and Gary hadn't ridden any of the trails before and Al had only ridden once before and that was with us. But, we all had compasses and maps and advice from others that had located it.

The ride started out on the Bridle Trail, then to the Sutherland. The falls was supposed to be past two park benches and then take the trail to the right and then left.

You might be surprised that there are benches out in this rugged territory, but there are lots of volunteer people who come out of Tuscan to do upkeep on the trails and keep the Saguaro catus' healthy. We saw one guy with a bicycle and a small rake and his job was to keep the horse manure off of the hiking trails. That is a big job. Ha, ha.

We rode to the same area that we had searched before and had the same problem. There are many trails and picking the correct one by feeling it is right, doesn't work. We had been told that there was a big blue green rock and to bear left when we came to a junction.

Everyone weighed in on which rock was the blue one and Al thought we needed to backtrack and look for a trail heading toward it. Marie and Gary wanted to strike out on their own and we all ended up following them. It led to a dead end. So we backtracked. Then Dan said Chris from camp said go right after the bench and then left. We went in again from the bench, but the other three decided to try other trails. Dan's hunch was right.

You can not see the falls because they are back in where two mountain peaks come together around a corner. You have to ride through brush on a narrow path and you can't see ahead. I could tell we were right before we even got there because of the sudden coolness in the air. And then the falls came into view. They drop down about 100 feet.

When we saw we were in the right spot, Dan went back and told Al, who went back and yelled for Marie and Gary. We had already taken

our pictures and were heading back when they came down the trail.

We waited at the cross trail for them and then headed back to camp. We had a late lunch and took a nap. We had ridden 11.27 miles in four hours.

Tomorrow we are riding with Chris and Jerry and Al to the Sheep Tanks.
