Out West Wanderings II

We woke up knowing we had to get Pearl some more Ulcergard. We are deep in the Gila wilderness and 2 hours away from the nearest vet clinic. We were not sure that they would even have any.

Because the trip to Silver City was on mountainous and extremely curvy roads, we opted not to take the horses, but go ourselves and leave the horses with Vicky and Jeff for the day. In the case that the vet would refuse to give the medicine because of not seeing the horse, I had Pearl’s three days of visits that were written up by Doctor Susan.

As we traveled the cab of the motorhome started leaking on us. It was raining and had rained all night. Water was in the compartment above us and coming through. As the motorhome leaned around a curve it would leak on me and then as it leaned the other way the water would run down and rain on Dan. I got an ice cream container and caught the water and covered Dan with a towel.

I was worried for nothing concerning the Ulcergard. The

vet clinic listened to my story about how we had three vet visits and almost lost the horse in the Superstition Mountains. And how we had had to use a couple doses at Gila because she arrived sick after our move. Dr. Susan had specified that once you start the Ulcergard, you had to do the complete 27 days, or the ulcers could get worse.

After getting the medicine, we went to wash our clothes. I usually do the laundry while Dan runs around to the feed store and picks up other supplies. When we entered the laundry mat there was only one person in there. He was a tall African American man and he was pacing back and forth and appeared to be reciting something he had learned in a voice you would use on stage. As he continued, we heard the worst vulgar language and threats you can imagine. The rant always ended in, “when you die, you are going to hell”. I told Dan he was staying with me this time.

The man repeated the script over and over. Probably 30 times while he did his laundry. In the end, I decided that he might have Tourette’s syndrome. Other people were coming in and everyone was raising eyebrows and looking at each other as he continued. Finally, he left with his clothes.

Only then did people start talking to one another. I think we were all afraid. One fellow came over to us and said do you know you are lucky that you are doing laundry in this laundromat. There is only one other in town and a car had just crashed through the plate glass window and one into the building. He had been there when it happened and decided to come to the one we were at.

So that is today’s interesting happenings. We went back home after stopping at the feed store. It had been close to 7 hours since we had left. We spent the evening with Jeff and Vicky since Dan sprayed the camper for ants again (third time).

Yes, they are still with us. We are planning on heading home tomorrow with our ants and wet mattresses in the upper bed.

We are still blessed to be alive and blessed to see this wonderful west.
