Out West Wanderings II

Today was our last day at Horspitality. We weren't planning on riding since we were meeting a high school classmate, Jan Gage, at 9:00 for the Wickenburg Gold Rush Days festival. But, Dan went out to feed the horses while I got ready, Pearl was sick again.

She was standing in the corner with her head down and she wouldn't come over to eat her grain. Dan came back to the camper and got me and I went down to see her. I took her temperature, listened to her heart and tried to hear gut sounds. She didn't have a temperature and her heart rate was fine, but there were few gut sounds. Another case of colic, I was afraid.

We gave her some banamine and some cooking oil and walked her around. She seemed to perk up a bit, but didn't touch her hay or grain,

I let Jan know we were going to be late, since we needed to watch her and see if she perked up. She did start to act better, so we went in to Wickenburg.

Jan and her husband, Tim, met us at the car show. There were some really pretty vehicles on display. Then we went to have lunch at Nana's restaurant. The food was good and so was the company. It was nice seeing someone from our hometown.

After lunch we said goodbye and Dan and I went to the art and crafts

Horspitality

After lunch we said goodbye and Dan and I went to the art and crafts

tents. There were beautiful paintings, photographs and crafts for sale. We didn't buy anything, but it was fun to walk around.

We headed back to camp with a newly purchased bottle of oil for Pearl. We also decided to give her some whiskey. Dan and I don't drink, but I inherited a lovely bottle. We used a syringe to give Pearl a dose, hoping to get her to relax her insides. She didn't appreciate the taste at all. (See photo)

When Dan checked on her later, she was more alert and not just sulking in the corner.

On top of having a sick horse, the ants were active again today. I was lying on the bed when one dropped from the ceiling onto my hair. This gave me the creeps! Then I started watching to see where they were coming from and saw a few more. Upon closer inspection of the

cabinet above the bed, I found a small hole that they had drilled. AND I saw an ant come out of it. We got the poison and the straw and I sprayed right into that hole! I sure hope that this is where the queen ant is and it kills her and her brood. I am starting to get really paranoid about this. :-(

Tomorrow morning we will see how Pearl is doing. If she seems OK, we will travel an hour and a half to the Superstition Mountains. A friend we met at Catalina is going to check just down from his home and see if the camping spot he knows about is empty. We will begin a week of dry camping with no running water, electric or sewer. I am looking forward to a new place to ride. This horse resort is nice

because of the amenities, but we didn't make many friends. Everyone here has been coming for 15-20 years and already have their groups of friends. So a new adventure will start tomorrow.

Hope you check in tomorrow to see what happens next.

God bless,
Pam
