Watt Knot Travels

The country side you see from the Llangollen Canal is beautiful. The autumn leaves are falling & those country smells are really potent. You wake up to cows, sheep and squirrels running around. A peacock struts about & pheasants hysterically run around. They amuse me with their odd gait.
Still, we must move on to pick up Iven & Ros for the crossing of the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct through to the end of the line at Llangollen itself. Yes, we now cross into the country where you can't pronounce or spell anything - Wales. The journey from Chirk to Llangollen is a bit like doing an obstacle course. 2 aqueducts, 2 tunnels & stretches of the canal which are all wide enough for only one boat. Your only option is to run ahead with the CB radio to check for any oncoming traffic. I can't believe in the height of summer that 160 boats a week arrive in Llangollen. It must be a canal traffic nightmare.
Chirk Aqueduct I could handle, Pontcysyllte not so well. Cruising along in a steel trough built in the 1790's 120ft in the air takes a bit of getting used to. There is no safety rail on the outside. You can step off the boat into free fall.
Locks gave way to Lift Bridges this week. They are actually harder work than a lock, but quicker to move through, especially when you have a car waiting for you to return their bridge to horizontal. I counted 80 revolutions of my windlass to wind up the bridge fully & 40 to bring it down.
