Before I go any further, stop picturing a cruise with a swimming pool, open bar and cheesy karaoke performances, in fact, begin to picture the complete opposite...
For the last 2 days, I have been floating down the Mekong river on a slow boat. This has been such a great experience in so many ways; meeting so many new people, floating past children washing and playing in the shallows of the river and spotting the tiny villages, only accessible by boat. Before departure, the boat was packed full to the brim of tourists, locals, and the luggage that comes with us all.
After day 1, we stopped over in a village called Pakbeng, where we were greeted by what seemed like the whole community...hostel owners selling rooms, tuk-tuk drivers selling lifts and young children that had been sent out to beg for money. The currency in Laos is seeming to be a difficult one to get my head around...a bottle of water for 4,000?!
It was a joy to arrive in Luang Prabang and find that the one group of fellow boat travellers I did not want to be in the same hostel as, were in my dorm for 4 nights...sleep would be minimal
