In the last couple of days, I have been exploring Nong Khiaw but am now back in Luang Prabang and have fallen in love with the place all over again (and not just because of discovering the best ever carbonara, but yes it did play a major part).
I'm surprised that I actually made it here in one piece, having been squished cheek to cheek (both types) sharing a bus seat for 4 hours and having my head smashed against the window or ceiling every time we went over a bump, pot hole, dog, or child.
I started my day with a trip up mount Phou Si (not as impressive as it sounds..). Birds in cages were being sold at the bottom of the hill to let out at the temple at the top for good luck. However, on route to the peak, I found myself next to a small boy whose birds were not likely to make it to the top alive as they were being shaken like a cocktail as he ran up the steps...not so lucky for some.
I hired a bicycle in the afternoon and spent the rest of the day visiting some of the places that I'd missed out on my first time here. This included the grand palace, Phosi local market, and the big supermarket out of town... I felt completely out of place here as locals stared and sniggered at me as if it was not normal for travellers to be spending their afternoons in supermarkets...
I found myself racing a young Laotian girl on a barbie bike back into town and tired myself out (nothing that a few hours by a pool can't solve!)
