My diary

Having thought that 5 days would be too long to spend in Hanoi, I managed to thoroughly enjoy all of them, whether they were spent lying in until 2pm and lazing around in coffee shops or getting up early to explore the cities hidden gems. Having met another lone traveller over breakfast on my first morning, we spent the rest of the weekend together experiencing capital city life in Vietnam. This, of course, involved a bit of a night out where we were pushed around by waitresses who collapsed tables and disposed of beers in a panicked state as the police marched up the alleyways (there are clearly some rules about where/where you can not set up business but by the giggles on the policemen's faces, I was not taking it too seriously...). During our stay in Hanoi, we became locals to a Banh Mi cafe, serving the most exceptional Banh Mi (would you believe it?!) as well as to a coffee shop where I experienced my first, and not my last, Vietnamese coffee - it's really no surprise that I haven't slept for 4 nights...! We also discovered a street stall that did cups of beer for 5,000 Dong, which is 16pence... I won't lie, it was disgusting and mine ended up down the drain but it was an experience nonetheless. Being a Vietnamese holiday, the streets surrounding the lake were packed with buskers, kids playing and dog walkers walking nothing but miniature poodles with silly haircuts. I was ready to be alone again after 5 days with company but I very much enjoyed a fairwell meal to PIZZA HUT (so so cheeky I know) before I headed for the airport.
