I am currently in Phonsavan, the most bombed place in the world, being bombed every 8 minutes non stop for 9 years during the 2nd indochina war. There are still thousands of unexplored objects yet to be discovered, causing injuries and deaths still, 50years on. And ironically, I have had one of the most amazing days...! A very cute Lao tour guide took the guests staying in my guesthouse to see 3 of the 82 plain of jar sites as well as a smal village where they make spoons out of bomb remainders. I had the honour of meeting a man who at 14 lost his eye in an explosion when he was searching for bomb scraps for his family. He entered the forest with 2 other boys who never made it back..now, middle aged, he still makes spoons for his family business. On contrast to this mellow man, we crossed the road into a different house, where a man sat laughing to himself over a bottle of Lao Lao whiskey...I think we had all had about 4 shots by the time we left (turning such an offering down would be rude!) and he was absolutely loving it, offering it then to the 8year old boy in our tour group!
