From Borneo to KL to Melaka to Singapore in a week, I am now spending my last few nights back in Kuala Lumpur. I found a perfect little hawker spot for dinner in Melaka which was right up my street (literally) with plastic chairs at plastic tables with food in plastic bowls eaten with plastic chopsticks accompanied with fresh juice in plastic cups. However, there was a slight misunderstanding when I asked for my meal to be "slightly spicy"...there I was, with already enough attention for being alone, white and blonde and now dripping with sweat with tears in my eyes trying to finish the hottest meal I have ever had - God knows what would've happened if I had asked for "very spicy"!!! After a quiet bus journey kicking back and relaxing, we arrived at the Singapore border. Now I have experienced a lot of border crossings and this was by far the worst. After queuing amongst hundreds of Chinese tourists for about an hour, and having being hit in the face 3 times by extortionately sized sun hats, I finally got to the desk where I stood for what felt like an hour being questioned on anything and everything - It was one of those times when you start believing that you've actually done something wrong when you haven't at all (or have I..?!). A sign read that souvenirs must be declared as they are not allowed in the country which set me off panicking as, being my last week, my bag was stuffed to the brim with them!! Eventually, I made it in to the country and boy was it worth the hassle... I was like an excited puppy, staring out the window of the bus with my jaw dropped down to my feet feeling smaller than I have ever felt before - I couldn't wait to get out and start exploring. The following day, after a lot of walking and tubing, I found a spot for lunch where I was served up chicken curry noodles. Now I don't know if you've read about the new Japanese meal which consists of raw chicken? Well anyway, I think this restaurant may have been influenced by that.....! I managed to get a splinter in my toe at some point during the day and funnily enough, was concerned about infections but having now spent time in this spotless city, I wouldn't be surprised if the splinter itself was sterile! Singapore was the first country that I have been to in my trip where it is safe to drink out of the taps but believe it or not, I just couldn't bring myself to do it - trust me, it wouldn't be worth the consequences (especially with a long haul flight coming up).....After a lovely evening out with some of the most wonderful people, I was turned away from a club for wearing flip flops (probably an excuse for not letting a scruffy backpacker in) and the night drew to an end. If only the expats of Singapore weren't so snobby, I may consider spending some time there in the future!
