So somehow, after returning my scooter in Koh Samui, I walked out of the building having just booked a 14 hour (turned out to be 15) bus to Penang....now this would be almost OK if it was a sleeper bus but no no no, this one departed at 6am...I think I've lost my mind. Having just accepted that I would be spending the day on a bus, I was pointed towards the only minibus at the bus station - now, spending 15hours on a bus and spending 15hours on a minibus are two VERY different experiences and no, I did not particularly enjoy it. Although, driving across the Penang bridge at 9pm admiring the island lit up in the dark was (almost) worth it. As soon as I arrived, I headed out to get some food in little India and a well deserved beer but it seems that alcohol prices in Malaysia are not quite what I have experienced in the rest of SEA in that they practically match wetherspoons prices - expensive, I know! Penang, Malaysia
It also turns out that I had
arrived into Malaysia in election week and this was hard to avoid considering their favourite time to whizz down the streets of Georgetown beeping their horns and shouting was just after midnight...thanking you muchly for that. On my only evening alone in Penang, I found myself in a gay bar in attempt to get onto some decent wifi to complete some uni admin. Due to my audience, I will not mention the name of this bar but let's just say that how I didn't notice that it was a gay bar in the first half hour is beyond me. The pictures on the walls made it pretty plain to see too...!
I am proud to say that I took absolute advantage of the incredible food hub of Georgetown (the rats seem to rate it too), having one night where between 2 of us, we managed to each taste 4 different dishes - I think my stomach has actually turned into a bottomless pit considering I could've quite happily carried on that way for another 4 dishes...(when another traveller tells you that "it's nice to see a girl with a good appetite", you must decide to take that as a compliment, right?!). I have noticed that over all of my visited countries, a common theme of food prep is to add tofu to every meal, which I've rather taken a fancy to. You ask for chicken and you're getting chicken and tofu, my friend.
Penang has treated me extremely well and through sightseeing, I have gotten to know the two extreme weathers of the island: 1. Ridiculously hot and unbearably sunny and 2. Rain that will have you dripping like a wet dog within seconds. It won't take you long to guess which was my preference, I'm sure.
