Camino 2017

Early start this morning as it was a long day. After Estella, we passed the monastery of Irache, where sick and injured pilgrims were once tended to by the residence monks. We passed on the offer, but you you can have a free sample of some of the local wine at the “fuente del vino” (yes, there really is a wine fountain!) which the adjacent winery has installed in commemoration of the monastery's former generosity towards pilgrims.

In the town of Los Arcos we had a quick lunch and visit the church of Santa Maria, with its elaborate Baroque altarpiece, its Renaissance period bell tower and its restored Gothic cloister. A little rest before embarking on the final 8 kilometers to Torres del Rio. In Torres del Rio is the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, styled after the Jerusalem's Church of the Holy Sepulchre, its construction is attributed to the Templar knights.

Long day and although the pool looked inviting only Mark would brave the unheated depths. Several others did enjoy resting their tired feet and legs.
