America on the road

The drive from Dallas to New Mexico was a long one, lots of straight roads, farms and nothing much else. We stopped off for lunch in a little town called Post, which was really cute. I say lunch, we had ice-cream. We didn’t reach our destination until late, it was a long driving day - so we passed the national park we intended on saying in and headed straight into Roswell for dinner. Turns out not much is open in Roswell after 8 at night, so we ate at the nicest looking chain they had, Buffalo Wings. SO MUCH FOOD. I had fried cheese curds for the first time, dipped them in caramel - definitely my jam. On the recommendation of our waitress - Mackalee - we had salt and vinegar flavoured chicken wings, again another weird food combo, another party in my mouth. After dinner we headed back to Bottomless Lakes national park to set up the tent. What we didn’t realise was how late it’d gotten, and how dark it was so tent set-up happened in the headlights, thank god for pop up tents is all I say - it took about a minute. There were a ton of mosquitos, so even though I covered myself in enough bug spray to protect a small army, I’m still covered in bug bites, Jamie has about 3 and they aren’t itchy apparently, I hate him.
After a fitful nights sleep - it’s very warm in a tent with no fan - we left bottomless lakes and went back into Roswell to see if we could see any aliens. Roswell would be a great town to work in I think, because nothing is open before 10 except the coffee shop, so we got breakfast. Poached eggs here are not the same as poached eggs at home, their yolks are too yellow, and they’re dry, but I had some great bread. Once the UFO Museum opened, we went in, a small fee was paid and we learnt a bunch about the alleged

Roswell crash. To be honest I think we both expected a bit more from Roswell, but it’s a nice little town. Not really worth it unless you’re really into the whole ‘close encounter of the fourth kind’ thing.
After the museum we jumped back into Betty - the car - and got underway to Albuquerque, which is spelt stupidly and not really my cup of tea, we stopped for a snack, Beef tacos but they turned out to be corned beef taco’s which was a real issue, worst meal so far for me, ugh.
After our quick stop off, it only took us about 3.5 hours to get to Gallup, New Mexico, ‘The most patriotic Small town in America’ where we ordered pizza and Jamie settled in to watch the draft (NBA) I took the longest shower, which made me really happy and then I ate loads of food, (Dominoes here > Dominoes at home) and slept in a bed. YAY.
