Dwayne's European Tour

Well we woke up today to discover that Abby didn't really have any clothes to wear. We think she must have left some of them in a drawer in Werfenweng. Oh my, that girl. It's funny because the night before we left Werfenweng, Abby was getting all her clothes ready and was packing her suitcase. In the morning her suitcase felt full but apparently it wasn't. So she'll be wearing the same two outfits for the next few days.

Once we were ready, we jumped on the bus to the train station where we caught a train to Munich. We apparently got on one that our ticket wasn't good for. It was a high-speed train that was direct to Munich.

Munich and Dachau

Thankfully, the ticket guy was nice and let us go this time. Hurray for tourist ignorance. Once in Munich, we caught another train to Marienplatz. There is a beautiful Rathaus there, which I think means city hall or town hall. Rat house sounds like a good name for where politicians work though. We were just in time to see the figurines move around the bell tower as the clock struck eleven.

From there we wandered a couple of blocks to the outdoor market to grab some food. We had everything from seafood to blueberries to baking. After lunch we walked about ten minutes to the south end of the English Garden. This place was massive. We watched people surfing on the standing wave there and were jealous of all the people floating down the river. It was getting later and we still wanted to go to Dachau, so we caught a bus then a train then another bus and arrived at the concentration camp memorial site.

We rented some audioguides and made our way to the entrance. We asked how long it would take and we were told anywhere from 2-4 hours. We thought there is no way we could spend 4 hours here. But in the end, the two hours we were there even felt rushed. It was very somber and peaceful there. The site does a great job at bringing people's stories to life and you really get a sense of the inhumanity that went on there. It was an emotional afternoon. There was so much to read and listen to that it was difficult to soak it all in. I don't think my imagination can truly conjure up images of what the reality was in Dachau. I don't think I want to even try.

We then had to catch another bus, then a train, some dinner, then another train, and another bus then we arrived home. So much public transportation today but it was amazing how every vehicle that we had to catch arrived just minutes after we did. We couldn't have planned it better.
