Europe 2023

Weather 7-14 Cloudy most of the day but almost balmy.

Well, that was an exciting night's sleep!
We decided that we'd splurge with an ICE high speed train back to Munich (They hit 250kms on the way). Still almost 2 hrs and the best price said 14:17.
So we spent 4 hours or so seeing as much as we could.

In it's day Bamberg was ruled by Prince Bishops and had quite some influence in the Holy Roman Empire. It also has the only Pope buried north of the Alps (Clement II).
It also has a Chapel of th Holy Nail although not one to the Holy Handgrenade of Antioch (search GoogleSo of course, if you are a Bishop and a Prince you need an enormous Residence and a Summer palce and a couple of other bits and pieces. All of this makes Bamberg a World Heritage Site of some importance.

With the time left we visited the New Residence with a very famous rose garden, the Bamberg Dom with Pope and the old court complex of buildings that has been there since the 11 century and the time of Emperor Henry II. (Remember him for later). It’s been a bit of everything over the years, residence, military camp, gaol. The present structure is mainly from the 15th century with bits of everything since.

Great place to visit overall with very interesting visitors. Seems like the place that German schoolchildren get excursioned to.

Bratwurst and grapes for lunch, you can guess who had what.

Back home on the ICE, very nice not to have to transfer trains.

Only 7.5 kms today.

Remember Henry II, he was married to Kunigunde of Luxembourg when he was Duke of Bavaria. He later became Emperor of the Germans amongst other things and she was crowned Empress with him and both were later canonised. Too long a story but they were both buried in Bamberg Cathedral
Have added her statue and crown to the photos.
The lady in the photo is not Kunigunde but she does manage the cheapest toilets in Bamberg.
