Europe 2023

Weather -1 to 10

Day started out a bit chilly.
The apartment we are in was 20 degrees.
If this had been our place at home -1 would have been about 1. Ah, the wonders of double glazing and brick.

Made it to the Hauptbahnhof for our 0900 train to Bamberg.
Even managed to fit in “coffee and pastry”. We know that everyone will be surprised.

It will take about 3 hrs and three trains to get to Bamberg. These are all Regional Expresses (RE). They don’t count of his high-speed trains as they only go 150 km an hour. Think Sydney to Gosford train on speed. It does help when the whole countryside is flat.

Arrived in Ingolstadt, our first stop and just followed the crowds. Everyone went to platform 1 where the train was to leave from. 10 minutes before it was due to an announcement that we had no idea about came over the speakers and and we just followed all the crowd back to the platform we’d come from. Not a worry.
Bikes, babies, suitcases, prams and lots and lots of travelers. Wondered if we’d fit on train especially when the one that pulled in

was full. Five minutes later everyone is on and there are spare seats. Now realise these three rains just shuttle back and forth.
Next change in Nuremberg was easy and 3 and a quarter hours after leaving Munich we at the Hotel Europa.
Asked if we could leave our bag there and very pleasant lady suggested that we leave it in our room which was available 3 hours before checkin time.
It’s good to book ahead!

Bamberg old city is a World Heritage site with the largest preserved medieval town centre in Germany. It’s surrounded by Seven hills so of course a medieval PR firm called it the Franconian Rome.

Bamberg is truly amazing. Well old Bamberg is truly amazing. The walk from the station takes you through the new part of town which is modern and a bit dodgy. Even the guide books say not to form an opinion until you get to the river.

Google Bamberg and you’ll get a picture of the iconic Rathaus or old town hall. The story, which might even be true, is that the Prince Bishops of Bamberg wouldn’t give the commoners land for a hall so they built an island and put one on it. Fantastic place.

In keeping with our healthy eating plan we followed up on the pastry for breakfast with a falafel plate and doner kebab for lunch. Afternoon tea/dinner was Bernadette ordering the largest ice cream west of the Pennines and us both waddling back to the hotel.

Excellent day and off to Coburg for any trip tomorrow.
Couldn’t help it had to haveextra photos of town and a set of shop signs.
