Europe 2023

Leaving Munich today.

Plans awry.

Plan, complete packing, arrive at station in plenty of time, say goodbye to Michaela, travel to Frankfurt in stress free manner, find hotel, see a bit of Frankfurt.

What happened?

Some last minute attempt to bring order to chaos resulted in the bags being packed, the place cleaned, coffe and pastry being procured and set to go by 1030.

Travel to station with Michaela who had come to see aged parents and make sure they did not fall down the now familiar 63 steps.

Easy transfer to Hauptbahnhof for 1155 train. Thought we were lucky as not many people travelling as platform

Thought we were lucky as not many people travelling as platform

rather empty.

That was because train was cancelled.

Some increased blood pressure resulted but there was another at 1245 and we eventually got an SMS from Deutsche Bahn that essentially said jump on this train.

Michaela doing her best to calm Mark to functional level during all this.

Very hard to say goodbye to Mick as it will be over 16 months before we see her again and WhatsApp isn’t the same.

We did get the ICE569 which essentially had two trainloads of passengers on board and we even got a seat.

Train delayed by 45 mins all up so got to Frankfurt in the dark and cold. Sightseeing deferred until Friday.

As we are no longer staying in dodgy part of town it was about a 10 walk to hotel. Place very nice, quite new and room on 15th floor with amazing view of station.

One of the reasons we moved hotel was that the cheapie Mark had booked had many reviews mentioning nature of area and the carpet. This hotel fixed that by not having carpet at all. Floorboards all the way. Also fewer prostitutes and druggies.

What it did have was a Redbull event. Large number of hip young people drinking RedBull and looking a bit twitchy.
Decided to eat in hotel and Mark enquired of helpful young lady if we

could have a table for two. She kindly told him she didn’t work in the restaurant but was part of the Redbull do.
Did not offer him any Redbull. We can only surmise he looked insufficiently cool and adequately caffeinated.

Most pleasant meal, one of the best we’ve had in Germany. Or we were just starving.
Sourdough bread came from a starter that is 150 years old, cooked in a wood fired oven by humans as a very proud waiter explained.

Early night in expectation of big day as journey home really start
