Europe 2023

Weather 8-16 Deep blue non rain sky.

Would like to say we had an early start but it wouldn’t really be accurate. Out of hotel by 1000 in search of coffee and breakfast. Not saying we had pastry but have included photo of selections. Bernadette had a “why is that man in the ladies toilet” moment but it didn’t put her off her food.

Terrific day, sky clear, sun shining, the whole place looks so different. Walked through fresh food market and a lot of backstreets.
Mark’s Navigation is still a little wonky and it was up to Bernadette to point down an alley and lead the way.
As it turned out it was an inspired point and we found a whole set of gardens and squares before we found the Cathedral.

doors and two choirs.
A bit confusing

It has what's believed to be the world's oldest surviving figural stained glass, these from around AD 1100.

Great place and the scene of “where’s my cap” from Bernadette. Frantic searching by Mark who found it in the cloister just before it was rescued by a German nun. She assumed one of the school kids she had been showing the place had dropped it.
This was the group of primary schoolchildren who’s teacher had been locking them in the toilet and turning off the light. Highlight of their visit.

We found the Rathaus, a famous Renaissance building that was unfortunately almost completely destroyed in the war.
Augsburg was the site of an aircraft factory and eas heavily bombed.

For 2,5 euro you can visit the Goldener Saal or Golden Hall. Built between 1615 and 1624 it’s one of Germany’s Renaissance masterpieces. It gets its name from the rich gold jewelry that covets the interior. The ceiling is covered with gold leaf (231/2 carats) and is 14 meters high. In 1944 it was completely destroyed. It took 17 years until 1996 to restore.
Not quite Canterbury Bankstown Council although similar deals were probably done.

Back to Munich on a not as fast train. 7 kms and pizza at home.

Tomorrow a museum.
