Today we visited the city of Johannesburg. I got the impression that it was not my Granny's favourite plan to drive through the ghettos. Simon asked me if I fancied getting out of the bullet proof car to have a walk around. I politely declined but now I think he may be trying to get rid of me.
Next to Gold Reef City is the Apartheid museum. Walking in it has the two pathways.
Whites and non whites
Blankes and Nie Blankes
It took us through a time you can hardly imagine your parents living through. Such barbaric times that ended only the year I was born. It is difficult to get a clear story about what it was like as a lot of people still feel too guilty to share the truth and will deny that it even happened at all.
The rest of the afternoon was less heavy going. We went to the theme park called Gold Reef City so named after the amount of gold mining that happened in that area. At the theme park you could "Pan for gold" more like Fools Gold but still fun none the less. Being with two pensioners I wasn't sure the afternoon would be spent riding the wild coasters. To be fair, it wouldn't surprise me if those things kill a tourist or two a day- they old! (The rides are old.. in this case, I wasn't referring to Simon or Granny!)
We opted for a family friendly ride on the ferris wheel instead that showed us great views of the park and surrounding areas.
After our wild trip to the park, we headed back home for some Canasta and chocolate eating. Two activities I am incredibly fond of.
The following evening we were invited to Debbie and Rob's house for a braai (BBQ) and had to endure the grunting of the giant pig. Porky is a family member of the Mills's that belonged to Chelsea and now is Debbie's pet. It was bought with the knowledge that it would be a small pig. They were lied to; it's absolutely massive!
The next day was our last together as a whole group. Ocea treated the girls to a spa morning so we all got pedicures and massages. It was lovely but mildly unsettling having a woman knead my bum cheeks while laying half naked next to my grandmother. (No other masseuse has done this to me before or since..I think I may have been inappropriately kneaded!)
