A Reading From My Diary

GoodMorning North Carolina. Today I will be traveling somewhere very near, to a place called Kitty Hawk located in the same state. Before i start my journey I will be stopping at the Shell gas station just around the corner of my hotel - Scarborough Inn. I am currently at the gas station and the total amount of gas I put is $2. Today i will be traveling to Kitty Hawk located in North Carolina, just 24 minutes away from my current location. I am currently on my way to Kitty Hawk. I just arrived to my destination. Kitty Hawk is a beach town in North Carolina. Trails cut through the Kitty Hawk Woods Coastal Reserve, home to otters and turtles. Sandy Run Park has a boardwalk and picnic areas. To the north, Kitty Hawk Pier has views of the Atlantic Ocean. The hands-on Outer Banks Children at Play Museum covers art and science. In the nearby town of Kill Devil Hills, the Wright Brothers National Memorial explores aviation history. Kitty Hawk, North Carolina is a small town in the outer banks that has gained world-wide recognition as the birthplace of flight. Interestingly enough, although the first flight took place on the beach shore in this small town, Kitty Hawk was not the original home of the minds behind flight, or even the place where such ideas were formulated. Orville and Wilbur Wright grew up and discovered many of their future altering ideas, in their hometown of Dayton, Ohio. It was only by chance that the Wright Brothers picked the small town of Kitty Hawk to do their experiments. When Orville and Wilbur chose Kitty Hawk as the location they wished to test their aircrafts they forever changed the landscape of the city. The men that would forever alter Kitty Hawk grew up in a Dayton home with their three siblings, children by the names of Katherine, Lorin and Reuchlin. Growing up both boys were incredibly smart and not surprisingly, did extremely well in both math and science. Before the fame that resulted from the invention of the airplane Orville and Wilbur Wright ran a bike shop in their hometown of Dayton, Ohio. Not only did they need to do research in to how to create this flying vessel but they needed the perfect place to test its powers. The brothers first traveled to Kitty Hawk in 1900 to experiment with the seventeen foot craft that they had constructed after tireless researching and building. This goal would not be realized for a few more years. This research paid off and in 1902 they returned to Kitty Hawk with what they, by the end of the trip, believed to be the first working airplane. On December 17, 1903 the brothers changed travel forever. It was then, on the hills of Kitty Hawk that Orville, with his brother running alongside him, took off in to the sky to achieve the first ever documented human flight (Wright Brothers National Memorial). Wright Brothers Memorial Picture of the Wright Brothers Memorial. Since that fateful day in December of 1903 the identity of this small town in the Outer Banks has revolved around the great invention that took flight on their shores. Wilbur and Orville have defined Kitty Hawk and forever etched it into history books completely changing it’s future. They did this by choosing it over all other towns as the location for their experiments. If it was not for their decision, North Carolina, more specifically Kitty Hawk, would have been forced to take on a whole other identity. What would the license plate be? What would it be like to grow up in Kitty Hawk if the monument did not sit on that hill? The Wright brothers not only changed the future of transportation but they shaped the future of a city, and in some ways, even a state. I visited the Wright Brothers National Memorial. From this exhibit I learned that wind, sand, and a dream of flight brought Wilbur and Orville Wright to Kitty Hawk, North Carolina where, after four years of scientific experimentation, they achieved the first successful airplane flights on December 17, 1903. With courage and perseverance, these self-taught engineers relied on teamwork and application of the scientific process. What they achieved changed our world forever. The second exhibit I went to is, Outer Banks Children at Play Museum, located in the heart of Kitty Hawk. The Children at Play Museum, is the only museum in the Outer Banks devoted to children. Its exhibits are designed to develop early-education skills in young children through structured play. The exhibits focus on building a child's capacity for social interaction, fine motor skills, literacy, problem solving, language, arts, creative thinking and math. This was a small journey. I will be pumping gas at the nearest gas station. This gas station is only 1 min away from the museum. I will be stopping at 7-Eleven and the amount of money I spend on fuel is $31. I will be traveling 4 hours and 25 minutes to my hotel in Washington. I just left North Carolina. I Just got to my hotel on 627 H St NW, Washington. I reserved one room for the night at Pod DC Hotel. The total amount I was charged for one night is $79. I cannot wait for tomorrow's exciting journey. Tune in for the eleventh journey.
