After getting through jet lag, Smith's top two teeth decided they wanted to make their debut in Germany, or maybe actually France depending on timing, so we've had some more sleepless nights and I've fallen behind on journaling. To help catch up, I'm combining Saturday's and Sunday's posts into one weekend post.
We realized on Saturday morning that though we'll be back to Wurzburg in a couple of weeks, this is our only full weekend so we wanted to make the most of it. And making the most of it meant exploring the area on two wheels.
I haven't been riding much at all lately, in fact I think my last ride was three months ago, and every time I go to get back on the bike I get really anxious. Anxious about jelly, tired legs, tight-feeling lungs, and generally just anxious about feeling bad at biking. Now I was super nervous because my first ride was going to be in a foreign country where I keep getting lost in the marketplace that I've been walking through for a week.
After a while of trying to plan my route out turn-by-turn and procrastinating, Tyler pushed me out the door and it was worth it. The road riding here is spectacular! There are lots of bike paths to get in and out of town and once you're out, it's just smoothly-paved country road after country road. And even though their narrow, drivers are so respectful and give you plenty of space. You look out on open sky and rolling fields and it's so quiet. Totally my kind of riding.
My turn-by-turn route was abandoned within the first five minutes, and there was a lot of stopping to check my phone and see where I was, but thanks to google maps I made it home without getting lost. I don't know how people went out for solo rides before smart phones. I guess paper maps, but wouldn't those have gotten sweaty?
While I was out, Tyler and Smith had some dude time and met up with Ross and Brit for lunch. Then it was Tyler's turn to ride. He was extra excited because it was the first time he was able to ride his new, fancy road bike that he got just before we left.
Once we were both home and cleaned up we strolled to the old pedestrian bridge over the Main River and below the fortress. There are a few cafes and restaurants right there that serve glasses of wine for you to take to enjoy on the bridge so we went and had a nice glass of Riesling. It was a beautiful night so it felt like all of Wurzburg had the same idea as us, but we found a little niche and had a lovely time.

It was a beautiful night so it felt like all of Wurzburg had the same idea as us, but we found a little niche and had a lovely time.
Then we were home for dinner, which was a ravioli dish and cheese platter that Tyler had come home with from Schweinfurt from an Italian food truck. It was super tasty.
Sunday was more of the same. Tyler went for the first ride and Smith and I strolled around the city. I was up next for my ride and this one was even more stunning. I was tempted to take the same route as before because it would have been familiar and comfortable, but I tried a new one and it was so stunning. Again, I got a bit turned around and had to stop many times to see where I was and come up with new routes on the go, but it served as a good reminder to me that sometimes it's ok to not have a prescriptive plan and that there's beauty in the unknown.
Tyler and Smith watched World Cup action while I was out then we went out for a nice Italian dinner. Smith was crabby because of his teeth so we were in and out of there quickly, then we were home for sleep time.
All in all, it was one of the best weekends I've had in a while. It's been a challenge for me to try to find more balance in our new life and take time to do things for myself sans Smith, but we had a good family groove going this weekend. Here's to many more!
