Tour de Smith

As famous as the Alsace region is for wine, it's also well known for its road riding.

I took the morning ride while Tyler stayed back with Smith and it was the most beautiful ride I think I've ever done. I thought road riding in Germany was great, but this totally topped it. They have a huge network of bike paths that weave through the vineyards and into the mountains. It's essentially a whole traffic lane for cyclists with the occasional car. The signage is fabulous too, so it's really easy to figure out where to go without having to pull your phone out all the time.

During the ride, I came across the Sigolsheim necropole, the French military cemetery for the second world war. It's located on what was referred to as 'Blood Mountain' after the intense battles in January and February of 1945. 1589 French soldiers are buried here.

The whole ride I was in awe of the history and beauty here. I'd love to come back one day and spend more time. Maybe even get to go for a ride together with Tyler!

Afterward, we went to a nearby farmhouse for lunch that our host had recommended. There's a huge patio and big play area for kids, as well as a petting zoo. Because it was in a small village, people didn't speak much english. Thankfully my french is decent enough to get us by, and it's been fun using it again. We had a delicious meal of foie gras, lamb and roasted chicken and a nice half bottle of pinot gris. A decadent lunch for sure, but do as the French do!

Tyler had his ride later on, but he's thrown his neck out again so it wasn't a long one. He went up into the mountains which he said were stunning.

There's a Michelin-starred restaurant in town, Julien Binz, and we took a gamble and made a reservation. We weren't sure how it would go, but we thought we'd give it a try. And low and behold, Smith did wonderfully! We had a five-course meal and he did amazing. They had a high chair for him too which made a difference. We ended up eating foie gras again - the first time doubling down on it for both of us. And although it was delicious, probably the last.

The day couldn't have gone much better!
