Retirement Odyssey - Part 2

Had a very nice breakfast in the terrace room at the hotel, but a little too chilly for our tastes to eat outside. Caught the #14 bus to Vieux Nice and took a nice stroll through the old city

Things have certainly changes since we were last here. The huge place Messina and associated gardens and fountains separates the "modern city form the old and the beach. There is a sleek tram line that runs form the train station to the base of the castle where the beach ends. The market seems much smaller and less extensive in it's offerings (no live animals, far fewer fruits , vegetables and flowers) The little uphill streets no longer include the authentic shops and restaurants we recall.

We strolled along the Promenade des Anglais where the terrorist attack took place last year (truck driving through a celebrating crowd). There were a few armed soldiers patrolling the area today. The stone beach is as we recall, but there seem to be more free public areas where they've trucked in sand. In the private areas, they now have chase lounges rather than the wooden pallets we recall.

The cloudy weather promised this morning, held off until later in the afternoon, so we spent some time by the pool. Could get rain tomorrow.

Nice (home) vs Angers soccer tonight; 2-2 when we left the brasserie.

Finished Peter Mayle's "Encore Provence" today. I think it's the last of this "series."
