Searching for Mike and Joanne - Again

Big tourist day today.

First up it was the Sky Garden in the Walkie Talkie building. This is the odd shaped building that looks (not surprisingly given its name!) like a walkie talkie. At the top of the building there is a fabulous garden built over a couple of stories with great viewing and very passable coffee. Free to get in but need to book. Top start to the day as we linked in all our spots that we have been in the last couple of weeks.

From there we made our way to the Charles Dickens museum just behind Grey’s Inn. This is based in the house Dickens lived in for a couple of years and where he wrote some of his big books. The house has been set up as it was when he was there. They have the most amazing collections. For instance, there is a painting of his wife doing some needlework painted just on 200 years ago. In the cabinet below the painting they have the actual piece of needlework and her wedding ring which is also in the painting. Again, what we anticipated as a short visit turned into a couple of hours. It was great to link the information on the time he was working at Gray’s Inn with the walking tour we had done there earlier in our visit.

After lunch of something green as requested by Mike (see later) we set of to St Paul’s for a visit. Janet has been here before, but it was

After lunch of something green as requested by Mike (see later) we set of to St Paul’s for a visit. Janet has been here before, but it was

the first time I had visited. Needless to say, the church is spectacular and we spent several more hours poking about and joining up all the historical figures. The three of us climbed up to the first gallery and Janet went on to the top of the dome. It was sobering to be in the crypt with Wellington, Nelson and the Churchill gates all lined up. Pretty special place. Worth noting that because I am a Freeman of the City of London I can be married in St Paul’s. Might be worth keeping in mind!

Next up was our Christmas present from Mike and Jo. Dinner at the Munich Cricket Club which is a Bavarian bar in Victoria. Bought back lots of memories of our playing days. Huge steins of good beer and sausage and schnitzel meant we were quite satisfied when we left there. On the way back to the station we stopped in at a pub where Liverpool were on the telly in the championship league semi. A 5-2 win kept everybody, especially RB happy. Home now for an early start tomorrow.
