It was time for my adventure to Bondi Beach! I packed way too much for my 3 night stay but looked the part in my huge backpack and flowery sun hat.
My dad drove me to Bondi and I felt nervous walking into the reception area with all the cool people giving me a quick glance before continuing to wax their surf boards. Once I was checked in we went for a quick drink and my dad left me to it. Alone for the first trip ever, I went to the beach with my kindle and sat awkwardly hoping that someone would come over and instantly decide to be friends with me.
Unfortunately this didn't happen, but I did go to the bar next to the hostel and met a lovely Mexican girl called Maria. We chatted for ages as the bar slowly filled up with more people. We decided to meet the next day to surf and relax on the beach.
In the morning, I did yoga on the rooftop of the hostel which overlooked the beach. It was really hard and I did not look graceful trying to balance on my forearms in the crow position!
Maria wasn't feeling so well so we gave surfing a miss and instead sunbathed and talked while watching the surfers. They were amazing which made me even more grateful that I was not attempting to embarrass myself by surfing next to them!
For lunch we went to the Iceberg swimming club restaurant. The best view of Bondi! The pools are both filled by the ocean's waves so they are a beautiful turquoise colour and next to them the ocean was a deep blue with the foamy white breaking waves on top. From up there we had an even better view of the surfers. They rode the waves for meters at a time and somersaulted off their boards when they knew the wave was over. I reckon I'll nail it by surf lesson 2!
In the evening I went with my roommate Ryan (who was from Scotland) to an open mic night and we met some of his friends there. I taught an English guy from London about giving someone a smiley while he was playing with his lighter. (A smiley is where you burn the 'smiley face' shape of the lighter on to your friend's hand.) Commonly performed by 14 year olds in state schools. I think Ryan went off me after this as his mate continually pretended to burn his hand as he had been taught.
