#NannyDotsBigMistake

Dee Why, 06.07.2018

My birthday celebrations began on the eve of my birthday eve. I had arranged to meet friends from Sandbar for goodbye drinks. The only problem being, that all the ones that could make it were already working! But my good friend Naj who is always keen for a beverage joined me at a place called Jar Bar where we shared some cocktails.

It was a couple of hours until Becky and Rachel joined and the bar was threatening to shut, after all, it was past 9:30pm (rolly eyes). Naj asked the barman to make me a birthday cocktail but first, he didn’t believe it was my birthday and then complained that he had packed everything away! His own problem if you ask me!

Unfortunately we had to cut it short but I still had a couple of hours before I turned 27 so I decided to say goodbye to my youth in a children’s playground! I climbed in tunnels, swung until I felt sick and went down a slide that I later regretted because it was wet ...just a side note, it hadn’t rained, Katy suggested that perhaps a child had weed on it earlier that day!

So there I was, covered in urine with one hour to go before I would have to grow up and become an adult woman. I will wear pencil skirts and throw judgmental glances at youths when they are

too loud or having too much fun on busses. (Okay, I might already do that!) But I will do it more fiercely! I shall only read informative books and listen to classical music and my friends and I will discuss the problems in Ghana while we eat salmon salads and sip sparkling wine.
Humph! At least I’ll still have wine to enjoy!

“Okay! Stop complaining about being old! Let’s go get more drinks!” Naj took me to the Dee Why hotel and this time they made me a birthday cocktail! ‘The birds flying high you know how I feel’ song played at midnight and I sang along with joy as I lapped up the lyrics. “It’s a new day, it’s a new dawn, it’s a new life...for me...and I’m feeling good! Dun..dun un...dun un!” Adulting got off to a bad start as I mimed jazz actions and sang loudly while a table of mid 30’s woman shot me judgmental glances! Damn it! That was supposed to be me now!

When I woke up on the morning of my birthday, I had a full inbox of WhatsApp messages. My brother, (awaits celebratory birthday message) sent me a screenshot from Facebook.
“Happy birthday Megan! Yada yada yada..love Ouma!” Well thanks Nanny Dot! Close with the name there but no ticket! At least I had a few other messages addressing me with my actual name! As her name is Dorothy my sister suggested I reply, “Thanks Doris!” But she had deleted the message already. To be fair, she is old and maybe going senile!

I got a cute voice note from Loren and Paige singing to me, FaceTimed with Sean and Katy (Skaty) and got a lovely message from my mum too! My dad then took me for breakfast at North head. It is a beautiful cafe overlooking the ocean with the city in the distance... We had the waffles! (If you didn’t read it as donkey from Shrek, we need to revise our friendship.)
Once home, we got ready for our trip away to Hunter Valley!
