Today, we are leaving Denver, Colorado and traveling 650 miles to see the Grand Canyon in Arizona. The gas cost us $2.30 per gallon, which cost us a total of $37.37. First, we decided to hike at the Grand Canyon. We also learned some interesting facts along the way: (1) "It has long believed that the Colorado River began carving the Grand Canyon about 6 million years ago, but a 2012 study contained a real shocker suggesting that the process may have begun as far back as 70 million years ago. (2) The Grand Canyon might look like the perfect place to go looking for dinosaur bones, but none have ever been found there. The rock that makes up the canyon walls is vastly more ancient than the dinosaurs - about a billion years more ancient, in some cases - but the canyon itself probably didn't form until after the dinosaurs were long gone. (3) Prior to modern flood control measures, the Colorado River provided a uniquely difficult habitat for fish, with heavy silt, frequent floods, and temperatures ranging from extreme heat in summer to sub-freezing in winter. As a result, only eight fish species are native to the Grand Canyon, six of which are found nowhere outside of Colorado River." We then entered the gift shop and bought a souvenir $10 each, costing us $40 in total.
After a long day of hiking, we checked into our hotel. We stayed at the Grand Canyon Plaza Hotel for $100. As our daily expenses, we spent a total of $207.37, leaving us with a remaining budget of $1,286.28.
