Our Adventures in France

We were woken by the Church Bells at 7am, it was overcast and showery so we took our time with breakfast. It didn't matter, the shops don't open until 10 am anyway.

Today was our day to wander the streets and get lost in the medieval city. As we dodged our way through the tour groups we found it a bit daunting at first. There is so much to see; the town square, churches, fountains, so much incredible architecture. We visited chocolate shops, Patisseries, Boulangeries, wine cellars, a shop that sells witches and a dozen shops selling Fois Gras. We made a pact to give the " ol' duck's guts" a try at some stage. We walked for hours, came home for lunch and walked for more hours. It is said that Sarlat has the highest density of 'Historic Monuments' and 'Classified Monuments' of any town in France. I believe that.

It was both strange and funny, when the church bells rang at midday. Every shop owner, except some restaurants, closed up shop. They almost shoved you out the door, dragged their merchandise stands inside and locked their doors. With this in mind, we were caught off guard today. As the town clock started to strike twelve we realised we hadn't visited the bakery and had no lunch. We bolted two blocks to our favourite Boulanger and raced inside as the bells finished ringing. Luckily our man stayed open until 12.30. We didn't have to starve while we are in Sarlat.
