Semester Abroad in Sweden

Ten minutes before 2:00 in the morning and my friends and I seemed to be the only ones left on the dance floor. I can’t believe it! This is the normal closing time for clubs here in Linköping! Outside in the hallway students are already standing in an organized line waiting to pick up their coats. I can’t complain though the party had been great. All the people I had met so far were there so there was always someone to talk to or dance with. Plus, it was the first time I got to try out the silent disco. There were three channels to select from pop, rock, and jazz. Each channel made the headphone glow in a different colour making it easier to see who was listening to the same song. I couldn’t get enough of it. I lined up twice! It brought the music and party just to a completely different level.

Swedish people are quite precise with time when it comes to planned events. There is always a starting and an end time. This is how you know how long you are welcome and when to say hejdå (bye). It is certainly something I had to get used to. When and where events take place can be found on Facebook. It's hard to get around without it.

Going out is definitely not cheap. A normal bear cost around 6 to 7 euros. But no worries there are plenty of student-run places where you can get a beer for half the price and still have a dance floor to dance on. These would be Ryds Herrgård (Hg), Flamman Pub & Disco, Kårhuset Kolleltivet and Kårallen. And if you feel like having a nice game night instead and having a great burger, I would recommend the VillaValla Bar.

Ordering a beer at the bar:

Jag will ha en öl/fatöl, tack.
I want to have a beer/draft beer.

Varsågod. Då blir det 69 kronor.
Welcome. That would be 69 krona (around 7 euros)

Kan jag betala med kort?
Can I pay with card?

Absolut, här är du. Vill du ha kvittot
Absolutely, here you are. Do you want the receipt?

Nä/Ja, tack.
No/yes, thanks.
