Yaay today finally we are going to Surinam! I’m so excited! It’s been 4 years since I have been in this country and I miss it every single day! Our flight is at 15:15 so we have some time during the day to pack our stuff.
Joshua went to work with Vick just for a little bit because he bought this signature Guyanese shirt that all the guys have here so he decided that he should wear it in the office haha!
Before we went we had a quick lunch and then we took a cab to the airport.

The airport we flew from was really small. It’s called Ogle airport and it’s an airport only for short flights and small planes. Everything here goes really slow and is really ancient. You have to go on a scale when you check in so they know what the weight is in the airplane.
After that you have to bring your bag to the luggage check and when you go through security it’s even funnier because they have only one place where they check everything so it takes a while and besides that the people who work there are not paying that much attention so yeah let’s say it nothing what I’m used to but that doesn’t make it less fun!
We flew with a little Cessna to Surinam and Josh was able to sit next to the pilot the whole trip so that was super nice for him! It was a really short flight only 1 hour and 15 min and because these planes don’t fly that high you have a really amazing view over the countries. What is beautiful is that the countries are seperate by a river so when you fly over that river you see both countries really well and that is so nice!
Surinam is 1 hr ahead of Guyana so we arrived in Surinam around 17:00. It was so nice to be there again. When we drove with the taxi to the hotel I recognized a whole bunch of stuff, like I never left. We had really nice hotel very near city centre. Everything was on a walking distance!
We were all pretty tired of the trip so we hanged around the bar for a little while and we had bitterballen! Yay! So Dutch haha! Everybody liked it!
In the evening we had dinner with Joshua’s uncle Kenneth, his wife, their daughter Gracelle and her daughter Brooklyn. Brooklyn is 5 years old and really smart and adorable!
In the evening Joshua went out with his cousins and I joined them for a little while.
Saturday;
The next day we woke up pretty early. Joshua and I took a little walk to waterkant and had some breakfast in one of the café’s over there.
After that we did a little shopping with Romona and Vick, well me and Romona did some shopping and the guys were watching us haha!
In the afternoon Joshua’s uncle Kenneth picked us up and took us to his second house in Commewijne, about 40 min drive out of Paramaribo.
He has this really nice country house over there that is just build. And they are still working on it. The guys did some fishing but it was a little to hot and to sunny to be outside for to long.
His aunt made Saoto soup for lunch. I can tell you nothing compared to homemade saoto soup! It was delicious. Josh and me can eat saoto soup all day everyday, especially this one which was super delicious!
After the lunch, Josh, Romona & Vick all fell asleep on the couch because they were so tired. So we decided to go back to the hotel and take a nap and prepare ourselfs for the evening out.
Joshua’s cousin Gracelle took us out in the evening and her brother Giovanni and his girlfriend came to see us also. We all had a blast and had a long and fun night. At 3 am it was finally time to go to sleep!
Sunday;
Sunday we slept in for a little, not too long because breakfast was only till 10 but just till 9 am.
After that we had to wait for Joshua's cousins to come pick up a bag of stuff his aunt sent to them from the USA. They have a 6 month old baby that is so incredibly cute. So it was fun to have them over and we could play with the baby.
In the afternoon Joshua and I got picked up by his cousin Gracelle, we went to see his aunty Airline. Airline is his dads oldest sister and she used to have a Chinese restaurant downtown Paramaribo. The place is closed now but she still lives in the big house above the restaurant. A fun fact is that when Josh was a little kid he used to live here with his aunt because his parents lived to far away from all the schools so there are a lot of memories in that house.
Aunty Airline gave us money to go out for lunch and we went to an amazing Surinamese restaurant. I don't think I ever had food that was that good in my life!
Around 14:30 pm we came back to the hotel. Romona and Vick went to the hermitage mall so we also went there. I thought I was a shopping addict but trust me Romona is a major shopaholic. She never gets tired of shopping and loves everything. Even after we came home on monday she still wants to go back and buy more haha! There is a 3 floor shoe store in that mall and that is the shop she definitely loves the most haha!
When Mona was finally done with shopping we went back to the hotel, took a little dip in the pool and got ready for our last dinner. The next morning was our flight so we had to wake up at 5 AM to catch a taxi to the airport.
Monday:
Our flight back was checking in at 6:30 AM so we had to be at the airport really early. But of course Surinamese people are not the fastest and so check-in did't start untill 7 am.
What I find really weird at this airport is that they search through everybody's suitcase in the middle of the hall. They searched through my bras my underwear and everything it is a little embarrassing if you ask me, but okay it's a third world country so what can you do. What I really liked about Suriname is that it has improved since I was there 4 years ago. It's a lot cleaner and better developed then it was before. After the one hour flight we were back on Guyanese soil. What was really funny is that Suriname is one hr before Guyana so we left Suriname at 7:30 and we arrived at 7:30!
The rest of the day we didn't really do anything we were all tired from the trip and relaxed and chilled a little bit.
SU I love you and you'll always have a place in my heart, I'll be back!
