Zanna and James 2018

30/8. San Sebastián to Ondres sur Plage. Interesting trip today, up the coast, in and out. Somewhere the language changed, but with no border control it ‘just happens’. Tourist towns, some incredibly busy as the last few days of holidays loom. We tried to go into St Jean de Luz and nearly were stuck but our trusty driver got us out.

Phew, just in time before the break to be let into the camp - told to take a spot and fix it up later. Use the facilities that’s ok.. la Plage is down the road - and so it was.

Ouch, those shell beaches are tough on the feet! Chilly but great. A real surf, with undertow. We checked out the restaurants at the beach and headed back to the camp. How nice. Beautiful trees. I had a swim - warmed pool!

Then checked in. The “man from La Plancha” did his wonderful thing. And now to explain ... way back when ... I think I mentioned we had trouble cooking on the charcoal BBQ so we bought an electric BBQ ... it’s called La Plancha, so we have christened James “the man from La Plancha” - yes, I do some cooking but he is the king.

Anyway, back to the beach next morning and Suzanna had a swim - very hard on James’ knee on the sand so he stayed up top. Boy was it rough, and the undertow strong - I fell over but a lovely French man pulled me up. Bit of a scare but I stayed having a conversation in French with his wife - they are great for me, weird in many ways with my broken French but people seem to understand me and I understand them, all works out.

We decided to have a relaxed day and walk back down for dinner.

The weather is definitely getting cooler. I had a swim but didn’t hang around in the light breeze.

We had been told that sunset was excellent at the beach and the place to go - have a drink at the bar and watch it all happen. Yes, lovely.

Sardines were definitely on the menu, and we shared a pasta - meals are very big. And a nice walk home.

31/8. The last day of August, time is slipping away ever so fast.
Saturday is not a good day on small roads in a 7.4m camping car. It’s market day, everyone out and being tourist areas ... anyway ... we found a market, found some Canard terrine that is delicious, found some local cured ham that was even more delicious...

And on to Mimizan, a place I had targeted in our plans. Turned out to be lovely ... well, we got bogged at the first site but we were extricated and settled in. The beach was about 700m away and we got our sand legs working again - hard work!

This camp, like so many, is huge. Cabins, places for tents, caravans and us. Big swimmpools, a shop, restaurant, good sanitaires, fresh water.
We had hamburgers and beer. Good tucker.

And another day another swim. A lot gentler than Ondres. We went late morning as it gets too hot mid afternoon for James’ fair skin. Very enjoyable. La Plancha man did his thing again.

Not many photos as we don’t take our phones/camera to the seaside.
The bottle of wine was special- Muriel was my Mum’s name: and it was a nice drop.

The seaside has been nice, but it is time to head north to The Gironde, The Medoc. And another chapter.
