Pickleball, which I had never heard of outside of Thousand Trails, is similar to paddle tennis, which I have never seen played outside the Brighton Beach Baths. I bring it up because apparently, pickleball was
started on Bainbridge island, right here in Washington state. It's across from Seattle, about a couple hours from our location. The story goes that the game was created by a congressman and his buds in 1963. The court is supposed to be the same dimensions as a doubles badminton court, but six feet shorter than a paddle tennis court. You can use wooden paddles for either game, but the cool players use graphite paddles for pickleball and fiberglass paddles for paddle tennis. (As one of the cool players, I had a purple and white fiberglass paddle that was awesome! Wonder what ever happened to it. Mom, did you sell it at one of your yard sales!?) Anyway, pickleball has been compared to ping pong, except you're standing on the table. Whatev. It's a pretty fun game, even though most people have never heard of it. Funny how it made its way all the way to Newton, NC. But I still have yet to see paddle tennis. Maybe it's just some weird Brooklyn thing.
Anyway, we've had our fun here in La Conner. Nice park in a nice location. Heading out tomorrow to Seattle area where we'll rendezvous with the peeps this weekend. Fun times. :)
