Big trip to the Rockies and back - 2017

Today’s big plan was to go see the north rim of the Grand Canyon. We left our motel in Mt Carmel early and figured we’d get breakfast down the road in Kanab… except the sleepy town of Kanab apparently doesn’t wake up until 8 am! So, after a faux-breakfast at the local McDonald’s (the only place open at 7 am), we headed down Hwy 89A south towards Arizona and the north rim.

Hwy 89A was very nice and the 40 mile (60km) trip along Hwy 67 into the National Park was even better. Now, a few years ago, I had visited the south rim of the Grand Canyon and this one – the north

Mt Carmel, UT to Page, AZ

Today’s big plan was to go see the north rim of the Grand Canyon. We left our motel in Mt Carmel early and figured we’d get breakfast down the road in Kanab… except the sleepy town of Kanab apparently doesn’t wake up until 8 am! So, after a faux-breakfast at the local McDonald’s (the only place open at 7 am), we headed down Hwy 89A south towards Arizona and the north rim.

Hwy 89A was very nice and the 40 mile (60km) trip along Hwy 67 into the National Park was even better. Now, a few years ago, I had visited the south rim of the Grand Canyon and this one – the north

rim – is totally different. All the hustle and bustle and tourism of the south rim is gone!

After checking out the gorgeous views from the Grand Canyon Lodge grounds, we decided to take a couple of routes to other viewpoints – Point Imperial, which is the highest viewpoint of the Grand Canyon; and Cape Royal.

After spending the whole morning touring the canyon, we decided out. After a fuel and lunch stop at the Jacob Lake Inn, we continued on 89A towards Page.

At the Navajo Bridge interpretive centre, a very strong storm could be seen growing on the horizon and within a few minutes some very strong winds picked up. So. we figured we had best try and make haste towards our final destination – the Rodeway Inn in Page, Az,

just on the outskirts of Lake Powell.
