Big trip to the Rockies and back - 2017

We got a bit of a later start today, after having a great breakfast at the Red Rock Cafe in Hulett.

Hulett, WY to Billings, MT

We got a bit of a later start today, after having a great breakfast at the Red Rock Cafe in Hulett.

It was a quick trip over to the Devil's Tower National Monument - what a wonder of nature that is! We even got to see a person scaling the monument while we were there.

From there, it was on to the west and north. With the vast size of Wyoming and Montana and their relatively small population, we passed little tiny places with signs that read "POPULATION 15" or

25. But even those little places are few and far between.

In fact, at some points, the nearest hamlets were 70 miles apart! So for most of the day, it was us, the bikes, cattle farms, horse farms and lots of wheat, hay and straw bales!

About an hour south of Billing, we stopped in at the Little Big Horn National Monument for a quick tour of the battlefield. Before getting there though, we encountered our first touch of weather, with some fairly heavy rain. The temperatures went from around 105F down to 70F and then back up again - which meant that by the time we got to the battlefield, we were dry again.

As we were leaving the battlefield a storm came up with some extremely strong winds and rain, so we avoided the interstate and

headed towards Billings along some secondary roads. Along the way, we had to stop for a grass fire that was trying to be controlled by the local authorities.

But, we made it to Billings safe and sound, with the Extended Stay America as our destination for the night and the Fiddler's Green Pub next door as our place to eat.

We did make the requisite daily Harley shop stop at Deluxe HD in Gillette, MT and it was nice to see some mountains (Bighorn Mountains) in the background too.

Tomorrow, we continue the trek northward.
