Today we are leaving Fort Sumter and going to Lost Colony in North Carolina. The mileage was 344 miles. We first stopped for gas at Speedway , the price was $2.49 per gallon. It took $21.41 to fill up our tank. We went straight to our hotel "Ramada Plaza Nags Head Oceanfront" it was $85 a night and also a 24 minute drive to our destination. The entrance fee was $20 per person. Our three interesting facts are how a man named John White, left his entire family and when he came back his family was no where to be found. Based on the scant clues left behind, some thought that Native Americans attacked and killed the English colonists.
“Croatan” was the name of an island south of Roanoke, now Hatteras Island, which at the time was home to a Native American tribe of the same name.
Alternatively, they might have tried to sail back to England on their own and been lost at sea, or been killed by hostile Spaniards who came north from their own settlements in Florida.
One. interesting theory was that the settlers might have been absorbed into friendly Native American tribes, perhaps after moving further inland into what is now North Carolina. After our little adventure to the lost colony we went to the hotel, packed our things and left. We have $2,659.16 remaining.
