Santiago Atitlán, the largest lakeside village, sits between two volcanoes. While there, we made sure to visit the folk hero Maximón —part ancient Mayan deity, part Catholic saint, part trickster. During our afternoon visit to Maximón's shrine, we saw worshipers visit this wooden mannequin with a sombrero seeking miracles, good health, and fortune from him. He has a lit cigarette in his mouth at all times, and is surrounded by burning candles, incense, and flowers all around. Several indigenous shamans hang out in the dark small space with Maximón, smoking and drinking. Unbelievably strange but interesting, to the say the least.
