One of the reasons why we came here to Damaraland was to hopefully find the elusive desert adapted elephants.
We were told not to go beyond our expectations and be prepared for disappointment, so on our first morning we woke at 430am for some coffee and brekky and then hit the road with "Mzewi" our guide and his trusty Range Rover, we drove for some time over some very rough terrain but found no elephants, so on we went, then there she was in the distance looking like a huge boulder and then she moved and there was the gentle flapping of her huge ears.
"Mzewi" move in ever so closer and there they were.....OMG....they came towards us not even caring we were there.
"Mzewi" said they were the "Herd of 16", each group is given a name, I was very overwhelmed by it all, an absolute privilege to have seen them, especially the calves and most of all 4 month old Valentine, born on the 14th of February.
We stayed for what seemed like ages, respecting their privacy and keeping some distance but they just kept coming closer......a day we will never forget.
