Fish River Canyon is the second largest canyon system on the planet after The Grand Canyon in the USA.
The canyon is situated along the lower reaches of the Fish River and the enormous gorge meanders along for a distance of nearly 160kms and reaches a depth of 550 metres.
The canyon formed some 500 million years ago and the gorge was not only created by water erosion but also by the collapse of the valley floor due to movements in the earth's crust.
