The Peloponnesian Divorce Tour

Today a planned travelling day to head north towards Napflio which was the next place we wanted to take a look at. There didn't look to be much in the way of campsites on the way but it would be too much of a journey to do Napflio in one hop so we aimed for Zaritsi Camping.

We picked the 'major' roads on the map so we could make the best time possible. There wasn't a route all the way up the coast so we did know that we would have to come inland and cross the mountains to rejoin the coast further north.

What we weren't prepared for was some of the most stunning mountain scenery we had encountered and that's saying something. The road went over the mountain and then followed a deep gorge. A lack of safety barriers, loose rocks on the road, villages with streets so narrow you could hardly get through added to the excitement. The only disappointment being a lack of places to stop and take pictures. During all the research I'd done this area had never been mentioned. The river is the Dhafnon river and the gorge carries the same name. The mountain village of Kosmas we passed through is higher than Snowdon! The river and the road emerge on the coast at the town of Leonidio.

Greece had thrown up another surprise. We reached the campsite and spent an hour or so on the beach, moaning about the pebbles and lack of turquoise! There was nothing really wrong with if but we'd yet to shake off the Elafonisos hangover!
