The Peloponnesian Divorce Tour

After a few days in he mountains we needed to get back to the sea. The plan for the next step of the trip was to explore the middle finger of the Peloponnese so we were looking for a site on the beach that would put us close enough to do a circular tour. There aren't many sites in the area so we decided to go for wild camping option which was basically a large sandy parking area next to a taverna and a long sandy beach.

Valtaki Beach is stunning, long and sandy and home to several turtle nests, duly marked to protect them. However its main feature is the wreck of the Dimitrious which ran aground in 1981. From what I can make out there were various wranglings over who should shift it, as a result it stayed where it was. It's slowly being eaten by the sea and it the not too distant future it looks like it will keel over or collapse in on itself as most of the bottom of the hull has corroded away. Greek health and safety have erected a sign which says don't go near the wreck it's dangerous!! So the first thing everyone does it get up close and stick their head through the rusting plates of the hull to see what's inside....me included.

Lovely meal of fresh fish at the taverna and off to bed.
