The Peloponnesian Divorce Tour

The plan had always been to visit Elafonisos Island ever since Danae the daughter of our friends in Lefkas recommended it to me many years ago. Now if someone who spent every summer on the beautiful beaches of Lefkas recommends somewhere you take notice and it has stuck with me ever since.

After returning for a second night at Valtaki beach we set off early down the third and final 'finger'. Elafonisos sits at the bottom and is reached by a short (10 min) ferry crossing. As we drove down to the ferry the colour of the sea was simply amazing. We arrived in time for the noon ferry and drove straight on. You purchase tickets on board, I asked if there was any benefit in buying a return ticket. Apparently not as he could only sell tickets one way and anyway it was a euro cheaper coming back!

Off the ferry and a short drive to Simos Camping right on the beach. I'll let the photos speak for themselves, thanks go to Danae, an unbelievable place.

Unsurprisingly we have stayed put for a few days, Birthday and Father's Day has come and gone. A bit strange celebrating both without family around but nice to have the cards with me and the banter over the airwaves.

The campsite run a free minibus service into town which is really a fishing village where the ferry docks with a few taverna's. We had a superb lobster spaghetti on the side of the quay and witnessed a turtle make a brief appearance between the moored up fishing boats. A great place to celebrate my birthday, rounded off nicely with a small Metaxa.

We haven't done much else other than spend time on the beach and generally laze about. There is a cafe bar on site so we decided to order some food while we watched Spain v Portugal in the World Cup. I decided to go for the special pizza which tasted great but was roughly the size of a paving slab! We also took advantage of the laundry service on site. Seemed reasonable at 10 euros for up to 6 kilos of washing so we left a bag ready to collect later. What could possibly go wrong, nothing really except I now have several tee shirts that will fit Oliver better than me!

There's been a couple of cracking H isms while we've been here. While out in the sea up to our shoulders in the water H pointed out that the waves were quite big and we were going to get soaked!

Then there was the young girl sweeping up the dead leaves around the site which is kept really well. The wind blows them around a bit and H couldn't understand why she wasn't provided with one of them ' leaf sucker upper things'.

Germany playing Mexico while I'm writing this. Currently 1-0 to Mexico, mainly Germans on the site, if only I had a sombrero with me! Having said that knowing the Germans they'll score a couple in injury time.

Update Mexico have won, off to walk round the site with a massive grin on my face!
