Nafplion was the first capital of the modern Greek state between 1823 and 1834and is now a vibrant seaside town with imposing castles, impressive churches and fascinating museums. The town has a long and rich history, spanning from ancient times through to Venetian, Ottoman and modern states.

Nafplion is a couple of hours drive west from Athens and I’m guessing we could have gone there directly overnight. However we went due south and seemed to sit out at sea for the next day being a scheduled sea day.

Nafplion, Greece

Nafplion was the first capital of the modern Greek state between 1823 and 1834and is now a vibrant seaside town with imposing castles, impressive churches and fascinating museums. The town has a long and rich history, spanning from ancient times through to Venetian, Ottoman and modern states.

Nafplion is a couple of hours drive west from Athens and I’m guessing we could have gone there directly overnight. However we went due south and seemed to sit out at sea for the next day being a scheduled sea day.

Nafplion is widely regarded as the most romantic city in Greece and it is quite lovely with wide promenades, lined with restaurants, trees and bourganvillea. Pete climbed to the top of the hill to see Palamidi Castle and we ate a nice lunch of yet more souvlaki. As we are soooo romantic, we had a glass of wine each as well. The parking is interesting, no problem parking over corners or sideways.

We will be returning here later in the cruise with Judy & Malcolm and will visit Palamidi and Bourtzi Castle. It feels as yet undiscovered, unspoilt and perhaps not enough on the beaten track. Pleasant mid twenties with a light breeze giving us (me) that windswept look.

We could easily come back here for a week, so five stars.
