Europe

Again NCL wanted to fleece us USD20 each to bus 6km into town, so we walked across the road from the terminal and caught the local bus for €3 each. We met a young Canadian couple, Kiearan and Lanare who had stopped at the information centre and had a map. We tagged along to the market full of fresh fish, fruit and vegetables. And more leather goods – not stopping! Then they pointed us in the right direction and we parted company.

Palma is lovely with wide pedestrian cobbled streets, cycle paths, lots of gardens and tree lined squares. There are also sunken plaza’s, one of which had a band setting up for a show, and large ponds/waterways. It was busy but not oppressive.

We visited Palma Cathedral which is one of the tallest churches in Europe at 44 metres high. It is an impressive sight from our ship balcony some 6kms away and up closer even more so. Built in Catalan Gothic style and completed in 1609, it has the gargoyles. The surrounding structures and city wall look to have Moorish influences. We lined up for tickets and we think the ticket lady thought we were locals as we got them at a discounted rate. It was just as impressive inside which beautiful stained glass and grandeur of the high ceilings. Our old mate Gaudi redesigned a nave in a sea scene which seemed vaguely inappropriate and out of character with the rest of the church.

We started the slow 6km walk home around the marina. There is a lot of money here and we had fun picking out which super yacht we would rent for three months. Pete thought we didn’t have enough friends to fill one. I thought friends would find us. Nice to dream.

Lovely city, worth a weeks stay or maybe a month…
