I thoroughly enjoyed visiting the Musee d'Orsay! My favorite painting from the visit was by far Vincent Van Gogh's Self Portrait. This painting was painted by Van Gogh in 1889 with oil on canvas. Many believed this to be one of his last self-portraits before he left southern France. Vincent Van Gogh was known for creating so many self-portraits because he could not afford to pay for models. In a letter he wrote to his brother, Theo, he claims this portrait portrays him in a calmer, yet insecure part of his life. It was surreal to witness with my own eyes a painting by Van Gogh. His work was shown to me even from a young age, and I can say I have now seen this portrait in real life. Using this painting in accordance to Francis Schaeffer's Four Standards of Judgement, it is clear that Van Gogh's world view is not Christian. Van Gogh was known for having quite a hopeless life, and I can almost see it in his eyes through the painting, Self Portrait. However, his technical excellence proceeds his reputation. His lines, colors, and style is unique and beautiful. I agree with Schaeffer in that these four elements are very applicable to the world of art. Van Gogh's painting was revolutionary for his time. His validity for painting this is seen through his facial expression. It was created to show how much he had experienced. The despair, turmoil, hardships, and hopelessness that had occurred in his life all seen in the way he perceives himself in a self-portrait. Though it makes me sad, I am still in awe of his artistic ability.
