Coober Pedy

Coober Pedy is a fascinating place to visit, we have been here a few times and really enjoy talking to the locals and exploring the opal mines and shops.

It is easy to understand why people come and stay here, the lure of finding opal and the possibility of making a big find is still very real, though no miners will actually tell you how much they have found.

We found out to set up a mining operation, all you need is a licence ($25 for 3 months), a few pegs to stake your claim, a generator and a heavy duty drill. We have all the equipment, so maybe next time?
