I was greatly impressed with the city of Alexandria, as a matter of fact, I believe it was one of the most magnificent places I've traveled to. It seemed like a prosperous and active center of trade with its very busy harbor . The Mamluks(Slave) had seized control of Egypt from their "Masters" and had governed Egypt and Syria as one nation since 1260. It was a shame to see that the Pharos Lighthouse was pretty much a pile of standing rubble.
In Cairo, I saw a mass of frantic people who seemed to be stuffed inside of the walled city. The streets were so crowded with vendors, asses, people, and camels it was amazing that anyone could navigate through this place. There were however, an incredible and impressive amount of Mosques, hospitals, and colleges. All of which were built by Amirs(Military Commanders) who competed with each other to see who was more charitable.
After, I left Cairo I decided to continue my trip to Mecca on my own. I traveled along the Nile River to the port of Aydhad and from there to Jidda which was along the Arabian coast. This way was not the quickest, but I would be under the protection of the Sultan and I had to make sure that I was alive so I could get to Mecca. Along the trip I happened to encounter men in the bathhouse without covering which was an extremely appalling custom, I was shocked and disgusted.
